David Copland was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1996, and since then has practiced primarily in the field of U.S. trade mark and unfair competition law. Prior to opening his own law office in Dresden, Mr. Copland worked for two decades for large international law firms based in the United States where he advised companies of all sizes on intellectual property issues, mainly trade identity protection matters throughout the U.S. and abroad. Mr. Copland is of counsel to JBB since 2018, and is admitted as a foreign lawyer to the Bar Association of Saxony.
Mr. Copland advocates before the U.S. Trademark Office’s examining attorneys, the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and domain name dispute panels. He aids in clearance of trademarks in the United States, applications to register marks, and maintenance of registration. He further counsels businesses on issues of unfair competition, rights of publicity, copyright, and advertising.
For almost 20 years, Mr. Copland has regularly presented on U.S. trademark law for the IP LL.M. program at Dresden’s Technical University.
Mr. Copland studied law at Boston University, completing a concentration in intellectual property with honors and graduating with a Juris Doctor degree. Prior to his legal studies he worked in licensing at a New York publishing house.
